Type 2 Diabetes - What Have You Done For Your Health?

By Beverleigh H Piepers

If your circumstances where your health is concerned are not ideal, you may be surprised to find yourself in this situation. Many people do. It may seem as if you were unlucky or dealt a bad hand, or that a harsh coincidence has fallen upon you.

First, you should carefully consider your circumstances before you come to any conclusions. What are you dealing with? If it is something severe with little hope for treatment, you may have been unfortunate, and we are sorry to hear that. But if it is a condition like obesity, Type 2 diabetes, or heart disease, then you really ought to ask yourself some questions.

Is it a shocker to you that you are overweight? Does it surprise you that you have been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes? Many people are quick to look for something to blame: coincidence, misfortune, family history. But it takes a rare individual to admit quickly they are the ones at fault.

If your circumstances are not ideal, ask yourself this: what have you done for your health? Have you taken care of yourself in the past? Let us be more specific - consider the past few years. If you are over 40, reflect on the last ten, or over 30, the past five years. What positive things have you done for your health in these years? Take a moment, and write a list. Open notepad on your phone, or get a pen and paper...

if you have gone through workouts, specify the regularity. Has it been a weekly, monthly, or occasional commitment?

how good has your nutrition been? Rate it on a scale of 1 to 10. Be brutally honest with yourself.

add anything else you have done to make a positive difference in your health.

Now, and this part is especially important...

write down beside each item in a separate column, what you intended to do during this time, to contrast with what you did.

the harder it is to write, the more it means you know you could have done more.

The point of this exercise is to serve as a reminder you are in control of your health to a significant degree. And if you are not actively committed to it, you are going to be vulnerable to health problems. If you are not happy with your circumstances, there is a good chance you have not taken good care of your health over the years. But...

Many times, with conditions such as Type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol levels, and hypertension, you have the opportunity to right your wrongs and take a new direction. So the question becomes: what will you do for your health?

Determine the difference you want to make, and do not hesitate - pursue it.

Type 2 diabetes is not a condition you must just live with. By making easy changes to your daily routine, its possible to protect your heart, kidneys, eyes and limbs from the damage often caused by diabetes, and eliminate some of the complications you may already experience.
