"Obedience and Mercy"

Deuteronomy 10:12-22

Upholding religion and professing to believe in God should have a significant impact on a person's life. These effects include how he relates to God and others in his life. Such is the teaching that God delivers through Deuteronomy 10:12-22.

There are at least two points of teaching from the Lord through our reading passages this time. The first point concerns the command of the people to always love the Lord and worship Him (12-15). Love for God must be manifested by obedience to His statutes and living according to the path He has shown. The willingness to walk in God's way exists not because of coercion, but because of an awareness of the love of God, the Creator of the Universe.

Meanwhile, the second point has to do with attitudes towards fellow human beings. The basis of an attitude to others is actually based on the example of the Lord Himself. Just as the Lord is a God who is just to all and merciful to those who suffer, so too must God's people do the same (18). Just as God delivered the Israelites from the land of Egypt where they were seen as foreigners, so too should God's people be solider against foreigners. What is meant by foreigners here are the nomads who were plural in those days; They are a group of people who are vulnerable to crime. Therefore, giving protection to them is a noble act.

God's Word today teaches us to always obey His statutes and love others especially those who are marginalized and vulnerable in our communities. Looking around us, there are many people who need our helping hand: those who are hungry, alone, and displaced for various reasons, and those who are oppressed. Let's ask ourselves: "What does God want me to do for them.
